Song of the Week: “Unchained Melody” by Elvis Presley. This video was posted a couple of weeks ago, taken from the same 1977 Rapid City show featured in Elvis in Concert and in This Is Elvis, just a month or so from the end of his life. That film has footage of him stumbling and laughing and forgetting the words to “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” But late Elvis is wonderful; here he is, bloated, fucked up on pills, but still capable of generating spine-tingling moments like this. Ignore the comments section — yes Elvis is playing the piano, no he is not lip-synching; he starts solo and then is joined by the band (with backing vocals by J.D. Sumner and the Stamps).
